The original Motorola Droid was the phone that truly kickstarted Android after more than a year of mediocrity. As touchscreens got better, slide-out keyboards got less relevant. Then they were suddenly all but gone. Verizon hasn’t released a follow up to the Droid 4 even though it was released over 18 months ago. Fans of the hardware QWERTY might have reason to wait on their next upgrade, though. A Droid 5 has been leaked with a delightful-looking keyboard. The leaked images show a device very much like the last Droid, but with a slightly more spacious keyboard and very manageable screen size. The Droid 5 is likely to be a more modest device than most of the flagship phones this cycle. It will have a 4.3-inch 720p screen, Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, and 1GB of RAM. There haven’t been any rumors of the X8 computing platform in the Droid 5, so none of the cool always-on features from the new Droid and Moto X devices would work. However, a smaller device with a real keyboard could have some appeal. Motorola is reportedly including NFC and wireless charging in this model to sweeten the deal. A holiday or early 2014 release for this device is probably the safest bet. It will be a Verizon exclusive in the US.
